DVD Region Free Playback on your Pc
Running a site that deals with unlocking stand alone DVD playback devices and allowing them to play discs from different regions naturally brings many questions to my inbox. One particular question that seems to be asked frequently is from individuals seeking to convert their desktop PC or laptop DVD Drive to region free status, in this article I hope to answer this question and point these looking for a solution in the right direction.
The chances are that your current drive will only change its region around five times, once these permitted changes have been used up your drive will be locked in to the region that it was changed at the final region switch. A free and simple is tool is available which can display the status of your DVD drive, it should work on most Windows based systems - to download “DVD Drive Info 2.2” visit:
www.dvd-unlock.co.uk/downloads.
Owners of older DVD drives made before the year 2000 are the lucky ones, this because most DVD drives made before this year are already region free by default. These types of drives are known as RPC1, drives made after 2000 are known as RPC2 and are normally locked with the limitations which I mentioned earlier.
Most of us probably own a drive manufactured in the year 2000 or later and the commercial market currently offers a few select software based solutions to get around the region issue. Personally my preferred option is permanently change the internal software of the DVD drive, this software is commonly known as firmware. So to put it simply we need to downgrade your current firmware. The previously mentioned “DVD Drive Info” program will display your drives make and model, you will need to made a note of this. In most cases you will be looking for a compatible RPC1 firmware for your particular model plus a compatible tool to install it with. At this point you should be made aware that changing your devices firmware could in rare circumstances permanently damage your drive.
A great place to start your search is www.rpc1.org, this site is forum based and I would recommend that you begin by entering your drive information into the search page, the has a strong community so answers or support assistance is just a short click away.
